WHAT IS PrEP?
- PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is daily medicine that can reduce the chance of getting HIV.
- PrEP can stop HIV from taking hold and spreading throughout the body.
- Daily PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by more than 90%. Among people who inject drugs, it reduces the risk by more than 70%.
- The risk of getting HIV from sex can be even lower if patients combine PrEP with condoms and other forms of prevention.
- It’s fast, convenient, private, FDA-approved, and CDC-recommended.
WHO IS PrEP FOR?
PrEP is beneficial to individuals who are HIV-negative and meet ANY of the following criteria:
A gay/bisexual man
- with an HIV-positive partner OR
- with multiple partners, a partner with multiple partners OR
- with a partner whose HIV status is unknown – and has anal sex without a condom, or recently had a sexually transmitted disease (STD)
A heterosexual
- with an HIV-positive partner OR
- with multiple partners, a partner with multiple partners OR
- with a partner whose HIV status is unknown – and doesn’t always use a condom for sex with people who inject drugs, or doesn’t always use a condom for sex with bisexual men
HOW IS PrEP PAID FOR?
- Most private and state Medicaid plans cover PrEP. Patients utilizing Medicaid should check with the benefits counselor.
- Patients will health insurance may receive co-pay assistance from drug manufacturers or patient advocacy foundations.
- If uninsured, patients may consider enrolling in a health insurance plan through the Marketplace, or Medicaid, if eligible. There are also manufacturer patient assistance programs that will help cover the cost of PrEP, ask the Be PrEPared! clinic staff for assistance applying.
